Mar Hall in Renfrewshire offers historic elegance, luxury suites and stunning river views. With refurbished interiors, beautiful ceremony spaces and exceptional service, it’s the perfect setting for an unforgettable Scottish wedding
The newly refurbished Mar Hall blends timeless grandeur with fresh, vibrant style, setting the scene for a wedding day filled with beauty, romance and unforgettable moments.
Your first glimpse of a fairytale setting
The first glimpse of Mar Hall promises a lot. The historic façade is so grand and imposing – can the interiors live up to it? Well, let me tell you, they can: the five-star resort has recently undergone an extensive renovation, and the new vibrant colours and modern decor provide a brilliant contrast to the outside.
I’m here on my first visit since the refurbishment was completed and I can’t wait to see the changes that have been made. I walk through the imposing stone porte-cochère entrance and up the candle-lined stairs to be warmly welcomed into the colourful reception.
I’m staying in one of the Grand Suites which, in addition to a spacious bedroom and bathroom, has a living area complete with couches, a dining table and even a piano.
Feeling like I’ve stepped into a stylishly decorated, luxurious flat rather than a hotel room, I take in the jewel-toned couches and soft furnishings that complement the wooden floors and white marble tables. There’s ample space and natural light here – it’s just the place to get ready with your wedding party or to relax with your other half after the excitement of the big day.
Elegant spaces for ceremonies and celebrations
Once I’ve settled in, I meet up with wedding sales manager Sam, who takes me on a tour of Mar Hall’s wedding spaces.
We start in the central Gallery, a long room with a circular bar surrounded by plush couches and chairs. It’s a lovely place to sit with a morning coffee, enjoy afternoon tea, or to sip cocktails in the evening.
From here, we step outside to the Courtyard. When a ceremony is held here, the central pathway becomes the aisle, with guests seated on either side, giving you the choice of the gardens and a bubbling fountain, or the exterior of Mar Hall as your backdrop. It feels like a peaceful and private slice of the estate to soak up with your loved ones.
On the other side of the building, the door opens onto a terrace where I’ve seen beautiful photos of newlyweds posing against the old stone balcony. From here, you can see the expansive golf course, with the River Clyde and Kilpatrick hills stretching beyond – a spectacular setting for outdoor pictures and a walk through the grounds as newlyweds.

Settings to suit every wedding style and size
Back inside the main building, I’m shown the venue’s selection of spaces for smaller celebrations – among them the Drawing Room, Study and Den, each with their own personality and styling.
Couples can also make use of the lively yet chic Slàinte bar. With statement lamps, vibrant wallpaper and richly coloured furnishings, this space really lends itself to fun evening photos.
"But the wedding options don’t end there", Sam explains as she leads me out to Morton House (capacity 150). "This standalone building has two function rooms, with a dedicated bar, plus an outdoor seating area, offering an exclusive space to celebrate your entire day uninterrupted".
For larger gatherings, of up to 350 people, you can move the party to the Garden Pavilion. It looks unassuming from the entrance, as most of the permanent marquee is hidden behind trees, but there is a huge space inside that can be tailored and sectioned off to suit your celebration. There’s even a terrace running along the side of the marquee which overlooks the golf course and has wonderful views.

Relax, rejuvenate and make it a wedding weekend
As well as being a golfer’s paradise, the estate boasts a newly renovated spa, with a gym, spa suites, reading pods and treatment rooms.
Back inside the main building, Sam tells me that Mar Hall will soon be adding a cinema room and games room – that’s in addition to the existing billiards room – offering even more places to unwind during a wedding weekend.

A feast for the senses
My mum joins me for dinner in the Dining Room to sample Mar Hall’s cuisine. The delectable menu includes standout dishes such as flavourful garden vegetable soup and parmesan-crusted monkfish.
The decadent desserts have wow factor too, particularly the ‘tipsy laird’, a Scottish trifle of berries, custard, cream and chocolate shavings that is assembled at the table, layer by layer.
A cocktail each is the perfect way to conclude a wonderful evening.
I could sense the moment I crossed the threshold that the staff at Mar Hall go above and beyond for their guests and that nothing is too much of an ask. It’s no wonder we feel so well looked after.
And I have no doubt that couples and their guests would have the same experience when marrying at the historic, scenic and versatile Mar Hall.
