Following an extensive £3 million restoration, Thackray House has reopened for a new generation of Scottish weddings. Here’s what couples can expect

Set on the banks of the River Teith in Callander, Thackray House dates back to 1625 and sits within 20 acres of gardens and grounds. Formerly known as Roman Camp, the house reopened in spring 2026 following an extensive £3 million restoration that has refreshed the property while retaining many of the details that make it distinctive.

A historic wedding venue in Callander
Thackray House is located in Callander, close to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and around an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. This location gives couples the best of both worlds: a countryside setting surrounded by established gardens, trees and the River Teith, without feeling cut off from Scotland’s central belt.
Originally built as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth, the house has welcomed political figures, royal visitors and stars from the world of film and music over the centuries. During the 1930s, it was owned by silent film actress Lili Damita, while The Beatles are among its better-known later guests, having stayed at the hotel during their early 1960s tours.
Following its latest restoration, original details remain an important part of the experience, from wood panelling and carved ceilings to open fires and 1920s Art Deco features.
Where can you get married at Thackray House?
One of Thackray House’s strengths is that couples are not restricted to a single ceremony setting.
The atmospheric 16th-century Library can host ceremonies for up to 80 guests, while the wood-panelled Wilson Room accommodates up to 75. Larger ceremonies can take place in the oval Drummond Suite, which has capacity for up to 150 guests and its own private bar. There is also a private chapel adjoining the Library for couples planning a religious ceremony.
Additionally, the Drawing Room, Library and Wilson Room provide spaces where guests can gather throughout the day, with views towards the River Teith and open fires adding to the country-house atmosphere.
Celebrate in the Drummond Suite
For larger wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations, the Drummond Suite can accommodate up to 150 guests. Its oval layout and private bar give couples a dedicated space for the main celebration while still allowing the rest of the house to become part of the wedding experience.
Thackray House offers exclusive-use weddings too, allowing the venue to feel more like a private country house for the duration of the celebration.
Food is prepared in-house by the hotel’s chefs, with menus designed around local produce. A garden bistro also makes the property particularly suited to couples interested in extending celebrations beyond the wedding itself.
Make the most of 20 acres of grounds
It would be difficult to talk about weddings at Thackray House without heading outside. The hotel sits within 20 acres of grounds, including landscaped gardens, a walled garden and private walks along the River Teith.
There is room for drinks outside after the ceremony, plenty of opportunities for wedding photographs and a lawn that can accommodate a riverside marquee. That flexibility also means the venue can cater for very different styles of celebration, from smaller weddings and elopements to gatherings for up to 150 guests within the hotel.
Stay the night at Thackray House
There are 15 recently refurbished bedrooms and suites at Thackray House, meaning part of the wedding party can stay on site.
For couples planning a longer celebration, having accommodation, gardens, dining and wedding spaces within the same property can make it easier to turn the wedding into more than just a few hours together.
It also gives guests time to properly explore the house – whether that means settling beside one of its open fires, walking by the river or discovering some of the stories hidden within the building.
