Bringing a big international guest list together is no mean feat, but Fraser and Jess did it with aplomb at this luxury castle wedding venue in Aberdeenshire
Planning a Drumtochty Castle wedding in Aberdeenshire gave Fraser and Jess the perfect setting to bring together family and friends from around the world.
With guests travelling from as far as South Africa and Australia, their focus was on creating a full wedding experience – not just one day, but an entire weekend of celebrations at a luxury castle wedding venue in Scotland.

Choosing Drumtochty Castle for a destination-style wedding in Scotland
Fraser proposed in South Africa in April 2023, and once back in Scotland, planning began quickly. “We knew we’d have guests travelling from all over the world to be with us,” says Jess. “So our top priority was finding a venue where everyone could stay on site.”
Drumtochty Castle in Aberdeenshire offered exactly that, with exclusive use and accommodation for over 100 guests. Although they had to reduce their numbers from 160 to 114 to fit capacity, the venue allowed them to spend proper time with everyone attending.
“It was ideal for us,” Jess adds, though availability meant setting a 2025 date.

Wedmin Wednesdays and a two-year wedding planning timeline
With two years to plan, Jess admits it wasn’t always straightforward. “It just gave me more time to overthink every decision,” she says.
The solution was “Wedmin Wednesdays. After work, Fraser and I would discuss plans, book anything we needed to, or tackle something on the agenda,” she explains. “This approach was really helpful – you’re both on the same page.”
Booking photographer Sophie Alexandria early was a priority, says Jess.
“She is so incredibly talented, and was like another best friend/bridesmaid on the day.”
A romantic castle wedding with modern, colourful styling
The couple wanted a day that felt “timeless and romantic – like a ’90s rom-com,” while still incorporating modern touches across the weekend.
Florals played a central role. Designed by Kim Dalglish Florist, the palette of pinks, reds and lilacs added a fresh, contemporary feel.
“The flowers were one of the most important aspects to me,” says Jess. “They were magnificent.”

The celebrations began with a relaxed pre-wedding evening at the castle. “It was pouring with rain, but it created a wonderfully cosy atmosphere,” she says.
A Sunday brunch the day after gave everyone time to reconnect before heading home.
A traditional ceremony with personal touches
The wedding morning started early, with music, mimosas and a busy bridal suite. “There was just the best energy in the room,” Jess recalls.
Guests made their way to nearby St Palladius Church as a piper played. “I could hear the piper and see everyone walking down to the church… that really built the anticipation.”
The ceremony itself was deeply personal. Jess’s brother Darren gave her away: “He and I share a special bond… I was absolutely beaming.”
Led by Reverend Brian Smith, the service included a meaningful cultural detail. “He also gave us the great idea of using shweshwe, a traditional African fabric, and Fraser’s clan tartan for our handfasting.”
From alfresco drinks to a packed dancefloor
Following the ceremony, the couple enjoyed drinks, canapés and a last-minute addition – mini golf. “That went down so well,” Jess says.
Speeches were a standout moment, with contributions from both families and even the bride herself.
“I also did a speech because I felt I had put so much effort into the day that I deserved to have my moment.”
The evening celebrations continued with live music, dancing and a lively atmosphere that reflected the effort guests had made to attend.
Top tip for couples planning a destination-style wedding
“The day before the wedding, put your phone away, stop stressing and just accept that the ‘big’ things are done,” Jess advises. “It’s time to be a guest at your own wedding and not the host.”
