It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the kitchen is always where the party is at.

This would be tricky to achieve at a wedding without stressing out the caterers, but India and Phil managed to capture some of that spirit by making an event of their dinner when they married at Falside Mill last August.

Singing waiters Singers Secreto put on a surprise performance, and one guest per table was appointed “carver in chief”, complete with a chef’s hat and apron, to carve and serve the roast meat. Forget Gordon Ramsay – there were no kitchen nightmares here…

Catering and accommodation at Falside Mill

As the new Mrs Graham recalls, the evening meal was one of the highlights of the day and raised so many laughs.

“Theatre aside, the food at Falside Mill really was incredible,” she adds. “Our guests couldn’t stop complimenting us on it.”

This recently renovated steading venue in the bonnie East Neuk of Fife can accommodate up to 400 people for a wedding, more than ample for India and Phil’s 90 guests. Aside from the food and bar (which are provided in-house), it’s a blank canvas.

“The ability to craft a day exactly as we wished was important to us,” says India.

Falside was the second of three venues we visited, and we knew as soon as we walked in that it was the right place for us. We were sold on its beautiful stonework, pink-accented doors and the variety of spaces it offered.

“We didn’t want a turnaround during the day, so it was a big plus that it had a separate ceremony room and a bigger main hall for our reception. Falside doesn’t have a mandatory list of suppliers either, which gave us free rein to work with our own picks.”

Wedding decor and styling in Fife

Fife-based event designers and stylists Gloam aced the couple’s brief for an eclectic aesthetic.

“Falside was the perfect base because of its neutral tones and timber-clad rustic features, and Gloam really succeeded in bringing our colourful ‘mix-and-match’ vision to life with beautiful ceremony and reception settings and stunning tablescapes,” says India with a smile.

“I must also mention Kim Dalglish Florist's phenomenal work"

"Our flowers were incredible, and I was completely blown away – I’m still not over them, to be honest!”

The bride says she’d recommend a blank-canvas venue because of the flexibility you get with it; she does, however, remind couples that there will probably be quite a lot of extras you might not have thought of – and the cost of those can really mount up.

The bride says she’d recommend a blank-canvas venue because of the flexibility you get with it; she does, however, remind couples that there will probably be quite a lot of extras you might not have thought of – and the cost of those can really mount up.

“With this sort of venue you can specify decor, details and layout exactly the way you want – I loved that,” she says.

“But bear in mind that much else, such as hiring tables and chairs, needs to be paid for as well. If you’re thinking of booking a non-package-based venue, I’d suggest getting prices in writing from the outset to help you budget for the final amount.”

A bonus of Falside Mill is that it’s not a totally dry hire where you’re left to your own devices; there’s a superb and supportive team behind the scenes, so you won’t need to book an on-the-day planner or coordinator to deal with suppliers and run your big day.

“Zara, Hannah and Alyson at the venue are the most amazing, helpful people and it felt like they were there to help us out whenever we needed them,” says India.

“They did such a fab job and kept things moving along smoothly – we didn’t even notice them doing their thing! They couldn’t have done more for us and we are truly grateful for their support.”
