Thirteen years after locking eyes on a dancefloor, Josh and Alice celebrated their love with a pretty pastel-toned ceremony and entertainment-packed reception at this popular Midlothian wedding venue

A music-led Scottish countryside wedding at Rosebery House and Steading in Midlothian, Josh Greenlees and Alice Barry’s July 2025 celebration combined a humanist ceremony in a sweet chapel, formal dining and high-energy live entertainment

The styling was overseen by Gloam and featured pastel summer colours including soft greens, blues, blush and peach.

From Zante dancefloor to Midlothian chapel

Josh and Alice first met in Zante in 2012. “A hot and sticky nightclub might not be the most romantic setting, but our eyes met across the dancefloor and that was it…”

After university, London life and a Costa Rican jungle proposal, it was “exactly 1,000 days” – as Josh noted in his speech – until they married in the chapel at Rosebery House.

They wanted a Midlothian wedding venue that felt “homely and comforting” while taking guests on a journey. Friends gathered in Rosebery House’s gardens before being piped through the trees to the chapel.

Afterwards, guests were transported across to Rosebery Steading – a reveal moment the couple loved. Josh and Alice followed in her dad’s red E-Type Jaguar.

Espresso martinis flowed in the courtyard before dinner in the Threshing Barn and dancing in the Hayloft.

“There was continuous movement throughout the day with plenty of space, yet the venue never felt too vast – it really was the perfect setting for us.”

A formal wedding breakfast

Although Rosebery Steading is a blank-canvas venue, Alice’s bridesmaids – former events colleagues – ran the day. “It was an absolute dream for us not to have to think or worry about the timings.”

The couple chose a formal sit-down wedding meal to contrast with the rural setting: white tablecloths, wine service and two long tables with no top table. Venison offered “a delicious taste of Scotland” for Josh’s English family.

Instead of a traditional cake, they served a supersized pavlova by Karen Barker Cakes. “Alice had a vision for months about supersizing her favourite dessert,” says Josh.

Guests received individually calligraphed mini tambourines as wedding favours which were enthusiastically rattled during the couple’s entrance.

Personal humanist ceremony

Their “very relaxed and laugh-out-loud” humanist ceremony was led by Gina Williams of Fuze Ceremonies.

“So many of our guests asked later if she was a good friend of ours,” says Josh.

“We put a lot of love and effort into writing our script with Gina to make it super-personal; it really paid off.”

Alice walked down the aisle to ‘Free Fallin’’ by Tom Petty, performed by violinist Sophie Cushnie.

Big showband energy and disco styling

Live music defined the day. Rosa Duo performed acoustic garage and funk/soul favourites during drinks, before Newcastle-based Groove Allstars delivered a nine-piece showband set packed with disco, pop classics and ’90s dance.

Stylist Gloam transformed the Hayloft with soft seating, draping and a giant disco ball cluster.

“We wanted guests to feel they had well and truly entered the ‘party’ space for our first dance,” says Alice.

Her custom Kate Rosamond Bridal two-piece evolved into a disco-ready third look. “I couldn’t recommend going bespoke enough,” she says. “You get the fun of creating something unique to you.”

Josh opted for a tailored Hackett London tuxedo, chosen across three fittings.

Looking back, the biggest surprise? “Just the sheer amount of love all in one room – no one prepares you for that.”
