Wedding content creator Emma and husband Darren McWhirter put their own spin on a city wedding, holding their ceremony at The Collector’s Hall in Glasgow before flying all 60 guests to Spain for a rooftop wedding after party at The Hoxton Barcelona three days later.

Personal vows, a gospel choir, three bridal looks and a Barcelona DJ battle made this modern Scottish wedding unmistakably theirs.

How a content creator started wedding planning

Before choosing venues or suppliers, Emma and Darren decided how they wanted their wedding to feel: “We wanted it to be relaxed, fun, personal and reflective of who we are as a couple. Once we had that nailed down, every other decision became much easier.”

As one of Scotland’s busiest wedding content creators, Emma, aka ur bts bestie, had worked at more than 150 weddings and made plenty of industry friends.

Darren ended up taking responsibility for selecting most of the suppliers – “I was going to find it very hard to pick otherwise,” laughs Emma – including Steph Nicol Photo, RHB Films and r.s.v.p. for content creation.

“I totally trusted our suppliers, so I could fully focus on becoming Mrs McWhirter.”

Are wedding content creators worth it?

A city wedding at The Collector’s Hall Glasgow

Emma particularly wanted a Glasgow wedding venue she hadn’t worked at before. When the couple visited the recently opened Collector’s Hall, they booked while it was still essentially a building site.

“We were sold on the team’s vision for the place and loved the chequerboard floor under the dome.”

Celebrant David Smith was non-negotiable but already had another wedding that day, so the couple scheduled their ceremony for 11.30am.

Emma walked down the aisle with her mum. “The anticipation before was so sweet, as was seeing the reaction on Darren’s wee face at the end of the aisle.”

The couple exchanged personal vows while GeO Gospel Choir provided the soundtrack. One particularly emotional moment came when the choir began singing ‘Mamma Mia’ as Emma and Darren surprised their mums by asking them to be witnesses.

The Barcelona wedding after party

There was no traditional wedding breakfast or evening reception. Instead, guests flew to Barcelona the following morning, ready for a rooftop celebration three days after the ceremony.

“All 60 guests were invited, and everyone came – we felt so grateful and lucky,” says Emma.

The couple had previously stayed at The Hoxton Barcelona and loved its atmosphere. “Emerging onto the rooftop seeing all our family and friends, the Sagrada Familia in the background, was wild! It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.”

There were no speeches or first dance. Instead, guests mingled over Spanish tapas-style canapés before dancing from 2pm until late with Stephen Bennett from Tartan Entertainment – including a competitive DJ battle involving the newlyweds.

“I’m not normally competitive but apparently I am when it comes to this!”

Three wedding dresses for a fashion-loving bride

Fashion-loving Emma wore three distinctive bridal looks. Her Glasgow ceremony gown came from OAH Bridal and was perfected by Amy’s Alterations, while friend Rebecca Kennedy of The Bridal Story created her Barcelona reception dress.

For the dancefloor? A chrome mini from Annie’s Ibiza.

“Fashion is a huge love of mine, so I’m not surprised I ended up with three wedding looks – and neither were my friends and family,” she laughs.

Wedding planning tips from a Scottish content creator

  1. “Don’t be afraid to do things differently. Some traditions meant a lot to us, others didn’t – and that’s okay. Your wedding should reflect you both, not expectations.”
  2. “Take a moment to look around. Some of my favourite memories were simply looking at our guests and seeing their reactions.”
  3. “Trust the people you’ve hired. There is a reason you invest in great suppliers – so you can enjoy your wedding.”
