James Croxford and Robyn Braes had their wedding at Òran Mór in Glasgow’s west end on 28th March 2026.

Their personality-filled Glasgow wedding combined a handfasting using a piece of a Pride flag, celestial-themed décor inspired by the venue’s famous ceiling mural by Alasdair Gray and an 18-piece brass band featuring four members of Robyn’s family.

From friendship to an Òran Mór wedding

James and Robyn met through work in 2021 and became friends bonding over Formula 1, Greek mythology and red wine. A trip to a race in Canada coincided with Toronto’s Pride Festival, where they brought a rainbow flag that would later play a part in their wedding.

“We’re both bisexual, so this brought us a lot closer together – in fact, we brought a rainbow flag there and used a strip of it for the handfasting in our wedding ceremony.”

Atmospheric winter wedding at Òran Mór

James proposed over a home-cooked dinner in February 2024, and the couple celebrated at their local, Òran Mór, just five minutes from their Glasgow flat.

“As we sat there, we realised it was the only place we could really imagine tying the knot.”

The converted former church, where they had enjoyed gigs and meals together, became their wedding venue.

Wedding styling inspired by Òran Mór’s mural

The couple took their colour palette from Alasdair Gray’s ceiling mural, choosing stars, moons, silver, blue and jewel tones for their Òran Mór wedding décor.

“My veil, which was covered in moons and stars and had a lot of blue through it, also echoed the ceiling.”

“It worked out perfectly,” says Robyn.

Robyn wore a gown from Aimee Bridal Couture for the ceremony, before changing into a custom tartan corset made by friend Ashleigh of ItsSewAsh. It matched James’s kilt from Kilts 4 U.

A personal Scottish wedding ceremony

Celebrant Susan Miller of Blossom Tree Ceremonies led the ceremony in Òran Mór’s Auditorium. Alongside the Pride-flag handfasting, James and Robyn included a ring-warming and shared limited-edition Glenfiddich whisky from a quaich. They also surprised two friends by asking them to act as witnesses.

Modern Scottish wedding ceremony traditions

“Altogether, it meant our ceremony felt special, personal and just the right level of informal.”

During the speeches, Robyn’s dad became too emotional to finish his, so her brother stepped in to read the rest.

Family music and a Glasgow wedding party

Drinks were served in Fonn Mór, with Robyn’s cousins playing piano and guitar, before guests returned to the Auditorium for dinner.

The couple gave each table a disposable camera, assigning a ‘table captain’ to collect it at the end of the night.

“The pictures were equally wonderful and terrifying,” laughs Robyn. “But we would thoroughly recommend it as you get to see the day through your guests’ eyes.”

After a first dance to 'Far Side of the World' by Tide Lines, The Brass Monkeys took the stage.

Four members of Robyn’s family, including her dad, perform in the 18-piece band. Miss Mobile Disco then kept the couple and their 140 guests dancing.

“I don’t think James and I expected to be dancing as much as we did – we didn’t leave the dancefloor once.”

Their lasting memory? “The love and warmth in the room,” they both say with a smile. “It was incredible and like nothing we have ever experienced before.”
