Bridal hairstylist Siân and Stuart's Mar Hall wedding had beautiful pastel-toned flowers, an outdoor ceremony, and lots of entertainment

Bridal hairstylist Siân knew exactly how she wanted her wedding morning to feel, but planning the rest of the day brought a few surprises.

From a funny outdoor ceremony and pastel spring flowers to a jumping dancefloor, live entertainment and an unfortunate encounter between a fountain pen and a Vivienne Westwood wedding dress(!) this Mar Hall wedding proved that perfection isn’t what makes a celebration memorable.

A wedding morning from the other side of the chair

As a bridal hairstylist herself, Siân – who works under the name Siân Hair – is used to being the busy one on wedding mornings.

“It felt odd to be sitting down,” she admits. “But then I remembered I’ll never do it again, so I allowed myself to enjoy being pampered.”

Rather than doing her own wedding hair, Siân booked Danielle Cree Hair after being drawn to the texture in her work. Rachel Louise Makeup Artist, meanwhile, was already a trusted industry colleague.

Despite allowing plenty of time before the 2pm ceremony, the morning disappeared quickly as two bridesmaids, Siân and Stuart’s two-year-old daughter Grace and members of Siân’s large family got ready across three rooms.

The experience has even changed how Siân approaches her own bridal clients. She is reducing the number of services she takes on per wedding party, prioritising a calmer morning and bringing in a second stylist where necessary.

Her other lesson? “Don’t leave it till the morning of your wedding to write your personal vows like I did!”

A funny outdoor ceremony at Mar Hall

The couple married outdoors at Mar Hall in Renfrewshire, with celebrant Sean Kelly of Fulcrum Celebrants leading a ceremony that suited them perfectly.

Siân’s close friend Amber Zoë wrote a deliberately funny reading, while another unexpected laugh came courtesy of Stuart’s legal name.

“Stuart’s first name is actually Donald – a family tradition – but no one ever calls him that,” explains Siân. When his legal name had to be used during the vows, even the bride struggled to contain her laughter.

One of the most touching moments involved their daughter. Siân’s brother-in-law Matthew played piano as Grace entered to 'Let It Go' from Frozen, before switching to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls for Siân and her dad.

“We got almost halfway and Grace ran back up the aisle, took my hand and walked alongside my dad and me,” remembers Siân. “It was so special and I’ll treasure that memory forever.”

Pastel spring wedding styling

Soft pastel colours set the tone for the April celebration, with pink – Siân’s favourite colour – at the heart of the palette.

Mixed Jenny Yoo bridesmaid dresses from Melle Cloche complemented the look, while Achillea Flower Studio created the wedding flowers and styling.

Siân also knew what she wanted from her bridal fashion. After initially loving Vivienne Westwood’s Nova Bagatelle gown, a visit to Rachel Scott Couture in Edinburgh led her to the slimmer-skirted Nova Cocotte instead.

The designer dress faced an unexpected challenge during the ceremony when a black fountain pen rolled from the signing table, leaving an ink line down the fabric!

Thankfully, content creator Lauren from Social Brides Club stepped in and soda water removed most of the mark – although the rescue mission put proceedings around 20 minutes behind schedule.

“Things not quite going to plan at an event with so many moving parts is normal,” reflects Siân.

“You choose if they define your day or become the stories you look back on and smile about.”

A Mar Hall wedding reception built around the party

While Siân knows wedding mornings inside out through her work, organising the entertainment proved less familiar.

“I usually only see the first part of a wedding day,” she says. “I didn’t really know any bands, for instance.”

One thing was certain: the party mattered.

Guests had portraits taken by Velo Portraits during the drinks reception before Drums N’ Roses performed and wedding band Hot Date filled the dancefloor.

Friend and Radio Clyde DJ Callum Gallacher also acted as MC, with the couple booking Tartan Entertainment’s Meal to Midnight package.

“He kept the energy high all day and played a massive role in making our wedding so memorable,” says Siân.

Family contributions made the celebration even more personal. Siân’s sister Megan baked her first wedding cake – a long rectangular design that became a moment in itself when the newlyweds lit candles, blew them out together and finished with a kiss.

For a couple determined that their guests should have the best possible time, the packed dancefloor was exactly the ending they wanted.

Siân’s top wedding planning tips

  • Decide what matters most on the wedding morning. Whether that’s relaxed hair and makeup or getting-ready photos with your bridesmaids, prioritise it – there probably won’t be time for everything.
  • Expect the budget to change. “Ours almost doubled, but I still think it was money well spent.”
  • Stay present. “Be present and stay in the moment – you won’t want to forget a thing.”
