Known as a twilight wedding, the latest wedding trend is to have an evening wedding ceremony and late-night reception. But how does this work in practice?

Some couples want all the bells and whistles and an entire day to enjoy their wedding, while others are happy to condense the celebrations into a shorter day in favour of cutting costs and planning.

Aptly named a twilight wedding due to the time of day it takes place, this type of celebration allows couples to still have the ceremony and reception they want, but over the course of an evening instead of a full day.

We chat to the wedding teams at several Scottish wedding venues to find out how a twilight wedding works, the benefits of this type of wedding, and what it includes.

What is a twilight wedding?

Not to be confused with weddings inspired by the vampire franchise Twilight, a twilight wedding is basically the same as any other wedding, except it takes place entirely in the evening.

If you’re a self-proclaimed laid-back couple seeking a smaller, more intimate ceremony without the traditional formality of conventional speeches and a sit-down meal, a twilight wedding is a great new option for you.

With guests not expected to arrive at the venue until 4pm or 5pm, the big day festivities kick off with the ceremony itself, and in a twist of events, heads straight on to an evening party shortly after the newlyweds have said “I do”.

What does a twilight wedding timeline look like?

Your guests will arrive in the late afternoon or early evening for the wedding ceremony, instead of an early-afternoon start like at a traditional wedding. After this you get straight into the reception, often with a buffet in place of the traditional sit-down meal. Then you can party the night away, often staying later than at typical weddings.

The exact timings will depend on the venue (see specific examples further down the article) but a typical twilight wedding will run as follows:

4:00pm - Guests arrival and drinks reception
5.00pm - Ceremony
5:45pm - Canapés, drinks & pictures
7:00pm - Cake cutting and first dance
8.00pm - Buffet served
12:00am - Guests depart

Top tip: Make ample use of sunset and twilight for atmospheric photos!

Is a twilight wedding cheaper?

This type of wedding can often be cheaper. The reduced number of formalities to get through (like a multi-course evening meal) means that twilight weddings can offer couples a more cost-effective alternative to their big day.

Can I have a twilight wedding at any time of year?

Yes, at most venues you can choose to have an evening-only celebration at any point in the year, but it will look different depending on the season.

Summer twilight weddings will have a later sunset time allowing you to make the most of potential sun before the nighttime partying begins.

For a winter twilight wedding, you can expect venues to make use of fairy lights, LED candles and firepits to create a cosy atmosphere, no matter the hour.

What’s included in a twilight wedding package?

This will vary from venue to venue, dependant on their specific location, facilities, capacity and food and drink offerings.

However, you will often have exclusive use of the venue, a wedding coordinator, a drinks reception with canapes, and a buffet later in the evening as part of the package.
